Yes, it's a typical failure, but a 2008 is nearly 8 years old, 2 years past the 6 year limit, so no chance of any kind of liability claim. I get the impression that electromechanical parking brakes are now improving, but yours, the original C-Max's and the 2005-2011 Passats were known to be trouble. £1,000 is normal for replacement parking brake motors both sides. Firstly - Handbrake Faulty, then. Secondly - ESP /ASR System Fault and in both cases the corresponding visual graphics. Also on the application of handbrake switch, it will not auto release when car moves forward, I have to off the ignition and it will then release when car moves forward. Also switching off ignition does not auto apply handbrake.

It's likely that one (or more) of the wires to one (or both!) of the handbrake motors has rubbed / rotted through on the inside of the ducting. As these are electric if it has failed in the 'on' position, then the only way to get it off
